Comprehension Strategy: This week our main focus has been Main Idea and Key Details. Identifying and understanding main ideas along with determining importance are prerequisite skills to summarizing text. Readers summarize the most important aspects of the text by determining the details that are significant and discard those that are not while stating the main idea in their own words, thus improving comprehension and understanding what is read.

When recalling the main idea we use words like "What was the story MOSTLY about?" This helps students remember not just one detail from one page, but the consistent idea throughout the entire story. We read a variety of stories throughout the week and recalled the main idea. At the end of the week we began recording the main idea and key details within a circle web.

The word families we learned about this week were the -ub word family and the -un word family.

Vocabulary: This week we read the story, "Duck and Goose". In this hilarious story the two animals argue over an egg and who it belongs too. Throughout the story they become friends and find a surprising ending that makes those reading laugh out loud. The words within the story that we added to our vocabulary chart were notice, attention, webbed, confusion, apologized, and snooze.

iPads: This week students worked on a variety of skills through many fun apps! Each morning students worked on responding to my question on recap. Take a look at our video below!

Then students reviewed their knowledge of the h brothers with BOOM learning cards. Students had to match the h brother with each picture that popped up on the screen.

During our reading rounds students scanned QR codes which brought them to stories about the 100th day of school. Students then used Balloon Stickies to record/write the main idea of the story they listened to.

They also wrote and typed sight words in the app Popplet. They added as many as they could and then uploaded their end popplet in Google Classroom.

Writing: This week we learned more about informational writing and learning how to write our facts on our planning page. We used our chart from the previous week to choose a topic. Then we began thinking of everything we know about lions. We wrote a sentence and drew our matching picture in each box.

Math: This week we continued learning about greater than, less than, and equal to. We used Google Slides to "eat" the bigger number. Two numbers appeared on the board and then students used their arms to clap towards that number "eating" it like an alligator. Students also used the phrase greater than, less than, or equal to when recalling the numbers.

Vocabulary: Our word this week was hundred. This word helped us understand the number more to celebrate the 100th day of school (which we celebrated a day early, darn snow days!).

iPads: For math this week students used doodle buddy to count out 100 stamps. Students used a template of a 100's chart and used a different stamp for each set of 10.

Content: This week was all about the 100th day of school. We worked on a 100 gumball craft where each kiddo made 100 dots with q-tips dipped in 10 different colors of paint. We also searched for QR codes around the room. Each QR code had a number that students colored in on their hundreds chart. After coloring all the right numbers a secret number appeared (99 for the 99th day of school). We also made a 100's day snack. Students counted out 10 pieces of 10 different kinds of food ranging from cheerios to raisins to m&ms. They got to enjoy the yummy snack during snack and rest that day. We also decorated crowns, played Would You Rather during morning meeting and wrote 100 words throughout the week!

SEL (Social Emotional Learning): Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

This week we learned about tattling. We started the week with reading "Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal". We discussed the importance of not telling the teacher if it is a problem we can fix on our own. Then we watched Tattle Questions on youtube. This was a good reminder of when to tell the teacher. And we also sorted stories into "SQUEAL" and "BIG DEAL".

NEXT WEEK:
Reading: Students will...
-learn words in the -ug and -ut word family.
-practice predicting during read alouds.

WritingStudents will...
-choose their own topic and start planning page.
-learn how to move facts from planning page to book.

MathStudents will...
-learn about subtraction.

ContentStudents will learn about polar bears and a few other polar animals.

Reading:
Comprehension Strategy: This week students learned about Author's Purpose. The acronym that is commonly used is PIE (persuade, inform, and entertain). When we test this skill for the report card students are asked to point to books that are for each purpose. We practice this skill by first introducing each genre or purpose and explaining what they mean, then reading books and determining why the author wrote that book. This week we learned about books that are written to entertain and inform. Next week we will continue with persuade.

Accuracy: This week we focused on the H brothers. We make it easier for kiddos to remember by calling them brothers and giving them a story to help them remember the sounds. Each day we introduced each brother with a short introduction song, then we brainstormed a list of words that had that particular h brother in it. Check out our words below! More learning with the h brothers are still to come!

Vocabulary: This week we read the story "The Hat" and added the following words to our extended vocabulary chart: snorted, startled, cackle, clothesline, perked, and woolen.

Writing: This week during Writer's Workshop we started our informational writing unit. Students completed their pretest for the unit and also learned what informational writing is. When we write to inform we are teaching others about a topic. I used 2 leveled reading books as an example to show others how we learn from someone else. One book was about lions and the other was about types of houses. Then we brainstormed a list of things we are experts at. Next week we will use that list to begin planning our first informational writing book.

Math: This week we have been learning about greater than, less than, and equal to. When learning and testing this skill students are to determine out of 2 groups, which one has more (is greater than) and which was has less (less than). We also added a new math by myself choice to review a skill of measurement from last week. Students are using unfix cubes to measure the length of pictures and recording their answer.

Vocabulary: This week we learned about the terms greater than, less than, and equal.

Content: This week we learned about snow and ice. We started the week with a science experiment where we tested cups made of different materials. We set the timer and tested to see in 10 minutes which cup would keep the ice in ice form the longest with little melting? We recorded our answers in a chart and discussed the differences and our observations.

We also ended the week with a snow globe craft. We used Doink Green Screens to print a picture of what looks like us in the snow and glued it to a snow globe outline. Then students filled out their responses to if they lived in a snow globe.

This week because of the snow days we spent time reviewing some past skills including kindness. We read the story "What Does it Mean to be Kind". This was a great book to review with perfect examples of how we can demonstrate kindness.
